FREE ANN ARBOR COMING UP FOR AIR PREVIEW EVENT OCTOBER 23 AT QUALITY 16

How can families help a son or daughter facing an unexpected mental health challenge? When do parents need to act to head off a potential crisis at home? What are the community resources readily available from local mental health professionals who can help protect you and your loved ones?

Join us on October 23 at 7 p.m. for a free Goodrich Quality 16 community discussion on the impact of mental illness on families and the essential role caregivers play every day. This event, presented in partnership with Starfish Family Services and the Heartland Independent Film Forum, features an exclusive preview of the 2019 feature film Coming Up For Air. Event sponsors include the Ann Arbor Observer

A Starfish Family Services expert will join Coming Up For Air producer Roger Rapoport (Waterwalk and Pilot Error) to offer a hopeful look at how family members can prepare for unexpected challenges with mental health first aid and other readily available local resources.

According to Community Mental Health professionals, clients in need of mental health services wait as long as ten years before asking for help. This event will help raise awareness to eradicate the stigma that can undercut timely care and treatment.

“My hope is that the stigma surrounding mental illness is eliminated,” says Rapoport.

“All of us need to talk about mental illness and benefit from the wisdom and experience of experts in our own community. Unfortunately there’s a fear of being mentally ill, a fear of the unknown journey ahead. This film honors the caregivers among us who step up to the plate to help those in need.”

In this feature drama single mother Anna Russell struggles to find out if her son Stan is having a tough time learning life lessons in college or if he is in real trouble. (What parent hasn’t thought, how worried should I be?) How do you know when to step in and get help?

The film traces her journey advocating for her son as he his impressive diving career and grades tumble. This family drama takes audiences on a relatable journey highlighting the importance of mental health care, sensible gun safety laws and the challenge of balancing high-stakes athletics with academic excellence.

Potential caregivers can breathe a little easier knowing that effective mental health resources and immediate help surround you in your community.

Coming Up For Air stars Deborah Staples and Chase Yi. The film is directed by the well known actor Robert Cicchini (Godfather III, Six Feet Under, Light Sleeper).
